More than a decade after California set a national trend toward longer sentences for habitual criminals with its three-strikes law, crime in the Golden State is down, prison costs are up - and voters are poised to soften the hardline stance.

California may set trend easing '3 strikes' law - politics | NBC News

This has got to be one of the dumbest laws ever passed. Thousands of people rotting away in prison for the rest of their life for committing non-violent crimes.

Stupid stupid stupid.

LOL -- I agree, agree, agree.

And, remember, we can thank CCPOA for 3-strikes (more inmates = more guards = more union dues = $$$). It's unfortunate how often special interests (and their money) run things - and we just don't get it. So, we 'got what we wanted' and now, hopefully, we are fixing it somewhat.

If you're dumb enough to steal a pizza when you've already got 2 strikes, I have no sympathy for your dumb a$$.

3-strikes, like zero tolerance and other "hands tied" laws, removes any intelligent thought from the entire process. Putting things on autopilot might sound like a time saver but the truth is you end up with more problems that way. Life is MEANT to be thought about.

How many chances do criminals get to have taking advantage of law abiding citizens?

Three, Four, Five? If your the third statistic would you just want to see the criminal who violated you in someway walk?

These are habitual recidivist criminals that don't respond to any type of behavior modification.

It's amazing isnt it that most of us have made it thru life without committing any serious and/or violent felonies in our life times? Not to mention committing three or more. BTW think about all those crimes that these dregs of human society commit before they get caught.

You people are just focusing on the crimes they get convicted for and sentenced on.

Right. The life sentence for the 3rd strike is the lifetime achievement award for dirtbags. Its for all the stuff they were never caught for or never convicted of. One thing I WILL gladly pay taxes for is keeping worthless scum off the streets.

This moronic law hasn't reduced crime in CA one iota and there's not one shred of evidence to prove otherwise. The only thing its accomplished is overloading prisons and burying CA in more debt.

I believe this law came about as a direct result of the Polly Klass case. Career criminals like the POS who killed her need to be locked up for life or fried.

But someone who was caught selling a small amount of dope or stealing a slice of pizza the law says strike 3 you're out of society forever? Again, that's just stupid stupid stupid.

Damn good thing because when I did an analysis of the proposition for the governor's office the potential costs were in the many millions of dollars over the lifetime of the law. As with most "good ideas" in California, this was merely one more in a long stream of unfunded mandates without regard for fiscal reality or common sense. But it sure made some hardline law and order type politicians look good with much chest beating and high-fiving.

I guess the old adage is wrong and the punishment no longer has to fit the crime. Pity!
