I have been visiting Bodie since the early 70's.
I have visited in winter where we cross country skied in and out from the highway.
There was a 1940 Willys Coupe in the auto graveyard there I considered removing in the middle of the night. The following visit I seen it had been removed. They had removed almost all the vehicles out of there to give the town the look of the earlier "ghost town" appearance. The town has been active and abandoned a few times in it's history.

Been there once. Interesting and creepy place. Worth a visit.

I sure would not want to be one of the resident rangers.

Bodie ghost town
I did way back in the late 70's It was fascinating then. There were park rangers living right on location. The cemetary was filled w/ lots of young children, which was because of childhood illnesses like measles etc. There was a beautiful sunset. All in all a very nice side trip. I would reccommend a stop if you're near there.

Visited several times when I lived in Mammoth Lakes. Definitely worth checking out, but not as a dedicated trip.

I was in Lee Vining a couple weeks ago and *almost* made the side trip, but it was getting late in the day and I had to make it to Bishop.

I deduce from your username that you're a motorcyclist; how's the dirt portion of the road? I hear mixed reports. I'd like to take my V-Strom out there.

I have always been fascinated with ghost towns, though I've never been to one. My biggest peeves are that these places get 1) vandalized and pilfered and 2) restored to it's "original appearance". I guess that's why I am also fascinated by parts of Route 66 and the idea of urban exploring. The fact that things are left as they were in some sort of time capsule holds a lot of intrigue to me.

Sometime, I am going to have to check out some ghost towns and parts of Route 66. I'm not sure about the urban exploring thing, seems like too much of an arrest risk.

Thanks for the link.

Eh ... I drove in, easily doable on a bike, especially a strom, if you've had any dirt experience, and you've got the right tires. Its a maintained dirt road, but will depend on how wet its been. There were rental car sedans back there when I was there, but its definitely a rutted/graveled fire road.

Cool. I've done the ride up to the Patriarch Grove (in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest), so that sounds like a piece of cake.
