I was thinking of Stanford, in the olden days, the rival of Cal.

Thank you so much for posting this. I was always fascinated by the story, and just re-read the book a year ago. Finding those boxes of hooks and tools must have been so exciting!!

Thanks again.

A great article on the search for her cave.

Article
There was a book back in the 80s from a small publisher about the initial encounters between the Spanish and the Chumash. I can't for the life of me remember either the title or author and have not found it Googling on key words. It was a tad schmaltzy but on the other hand being an account of that set of encounters was pretty unique.

It actually tried to connect a Chumash princess with the Calafia legend.

Racking my brain here.

Another piece of historical trivia, the Channel Islands were reported to have been left out of the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo that settled the War On Mexico and thus, Mexico owns the Channel Islands.

It was fiction. One of those "historical" novels.

O'Dell based his book on the true story of the woman who left on San Nicolas Island as a girl. While it was believed that she got off the ship because she had forgotten her baby, in the novel she returned for her little brother.

It's an interesting book to re-read as an adult.

Makes me want to read it again. It's probably the book that sent me on my way reading 'survivor' novels. It really defined what makes people strong enough and flexable enough to deal with the unthinkable.
