Okay, just got back from SLO and the surrounding areas and I can't believe I didn't see one WalMart and not even a mall! Oh, the horror!

Seriously, really great place and I can't believe anyone would miss something like a mall or WalMart. SLO seemed perfect to me in every sense of the word.

So, are there any negatives if you don't need to have a job to live there?

There's a mall on Madonna Road, and there is a Costco, and other big box stores. They are just tucked discreetly out of the path of tourists. I agree though, it is a nice town.
Love the Thursday evening farmer's market!

Default airport

The biggest disadvantage of living in SLO is the lack of an airport or large city in the vicinity for concerts/museums etc.

Eh? There are airports with commercial service at Santa Maria, San Luis Obispo. Whether or not a large city near by is a plus or minus is very much an individual thing. Some folks think the large cities of California are not far enough away.

Concerts? Why heck, every year the Mid State fair has a plethora of concerts!

Lots of Angelenos retire there, so that tells you something. It's really about whether you want to live in a small city/metro vs. a larger one. SLO would be too small for me, but there's no right answer to that question.

Curmudgeon ain't really country, he is a City boy. He just has a double wide in Missouri, sort of a Hillbilly affectation. The pure hillbillies in the Ozarks just got singlewides

I am not only country, I am cheap, we go to the fair and walk around while Taylor Swift etc plays their little hearts out, we can hear em good!

I love SLO but they absolutely do have a mall that used to be a traditional mall but was changed years ago to more of an outdoor strip mall with many of the same stores you would find at any other mall. Combine with that, downtown has many of the same chain stores you would find in any other mall, and there is a Target and Costco on Los Osos Valley road. I guess spreading those out is enough to trick some people. I like Target more than Walmart, but I don't understand the smugness that follows the hatred of Walmart. There is also or was a Walmart nearby in Arroyo Grande.

SLO is a great town that I would love to move back to someday but what makes SLO great isn't the absence of a mall or Walmart.
