Can you elaborate in what you're selling? I think you're overestimating the scope of ML. I'll echo others recommendations of Tahoe, or maybe Reno/Carson City Area. Maybe bishop? I can't really comment on schools, but I don't think ML sounds right for you, other than for your hobbies. You still haven't really said where you plan to work. There isn't really a ton of industry/labor in ML, other than MMSA, which doesn't pay well enough to support your fam. While its a nice idea, I highly recommend visiting before making this decision.

Here is are a couple interesting quotes from a previous thread discussing raising kids in Tahoe. Overall it doesn't sound like a bad place for young families:

Quote:
Tahoe has a lot of families with kids. Many of them home school, several great schools, and an overall great place to grow up! You can get an idea/random sampling of the homes in Tahoe at www.horizonlinerealty/helpusell.com (broken link)

If you are a family with young kids, South Lake Tahoe offers endless opportunities for you. South Lake is very focused on the family. The Parents are incredibly involved in all activities like club soccer, AYSO, Heavenly ski team,Karate, gymnastics, tahoe swim team, dance, golf, ice hockey, bowling, rock climbing and the list goes on. There is also of course the natural beauty that South Lake Tahoe provides letting the kids play in the actual forests and alpine lake. The school are decent. The LTESMS which is mentioned above is a magnet school not private. It's focus is on environmental science and is K-5. It has won many awards and is rated one of the top schools in the state. South Tahoe High School has been under construction as measure G passed allowing for monies to b spent on the renovations of our campus. The architects have just won an award for their designs on our school. The campus is gorgeous.

Two of mine graduated Truckee High, one went on to graduate from UC Davis, the other is a Junior at U of H, Geology, Most of south shore is flat and boring, not really a mountain town, more of a casino worker town.

The only difference between Montana and Minnesota is Montana hasn't lost four Superbowls.

But hey, Montana State is in the FCS playoffs. The Bobcats are 10-1 and are the #3 seed. The only team to beat them this year is the #2 seed.

Crime is pretty much limited to burglary and drunk stuff. In 40 years I never locked my front door.
Don't live in South Shore, it is just the east side of Sacramento.

Northshore or Truckee is better, and you have Alpine and Squaw and Sugar Bowl.

SSI and she skis?
How is South Lake the east side of Sac when it's almost two hours away??

I was wondering the same thing. And South Lake is definately not flat, C'mon. Heavenly Ski Resort has an extremely steep mountain face right down to the base near the lake.

highnlite, I detect some kinda North Lake vs. South Lake rivalry thing going on here or something, admit it. Did your kids play too many sporting events against South Lake kids or something?

They are both *in* the beautiful High Sierra vs. Sac Town or even places in the foothills which are obviously quite different.

South lake is culturally the east side of Sac, no class. As for flat, Heavenly is a ski hill that looks out over thousands of acres of dead flat South Lake stretching flatly from the State line to the Y and flatly out to Christmas valley.. If you get off 50 or 89 and drive through the neighborhoods, I am always surprised at the junkiness of of the neighborhoods.

My kids did not so much play against South Lake, as drove over them like steam roller on fresh asphalt

You can certainly see fine landscapes from South Lake, but not so much in South Lake.
