I don't necessarily agree with the sentiments of the song, but they were largely satirical it's an awesome tune regardless:

I've always loved Merle Haggard; here's a good cover of a tune about California that even the folks who fled to the rural south should be able to appreciate as a good old country tune
I first heard this song when I was about sixteen or so, and totally sick of living in Boston. The lines about the red brick buildings and the dreadful winter definitely resonated with me.

When I drove back to California from Washington State in '09, I hit the CA border from Oregon just around sunrise. Pulled over just before the station, put the top down, got through, and queued this up. It was freezing cold, but I didn't care... was so happy to be back after what felt like being exiled in hell for a year and a half.
The memory is a cherished one of mine: the cold air sacking my arms and face (which I excused to myself as the reason for there being tears in my eyes), the sun coming up and lighting the hills up all golden, my S2000's engine roaring, and this song playing.
