This tears me up - two cougar cubs were shot and killed by wildlife authorities in Half Moon Bay CA. They were under a house and the so called wildlife authorities said they needed to be killed instead of tranquilzed because they were afraid the cubs would do harm if they escaped. They apparently made no effort to call in additonal help. Words fail me.

It was a judgement call I guess. They didn't even try to trap them and hurried to judgement to shoot them. Easy to Monday (well Wendnesday) morning quarterback their decision but still seems they acted too hastily.

It really sucks they had to kill them. However once they enter cities, they become a risk to pets and children. This isn't the first time this has happened in the bay area. Some years back an adult was shot and killed after someone's dog picked up the scent and treed it in Palo Alto. There was also one roaming the Gormet Ghetto in Berkeley at 3am one morning. Berkeley police obtained permission to shoot it. I don't know Palo Alto well or where it was but for one to make it to the former ghetto required traversing A LOT of residential areas.

The cat population is out of control now. There are 20 cats being tracked in an area that can sustain 2 at most.

Large dangerous game are no longer afraid of humans and have become addicted to garbage. We have gone from active hunts to little to no hunt. Formerly rural / pastoral areas are now exurbs peopled by those who have a "Bambi" mentality regarding nature. True active stewardship is nearly dead.

It is a tragedy of the commons and so called Greens, and other radicals, are to blame.

Cause there're cities and farms everywhere, they have nowhere to go.. it's not the cat population that's out of control.

Perhaps because average person from existing non-sustainable overbloated civilization generates huge amounts of garbage and such is found everywhere where wilderness should be (versus sprawling dwellings), and people with a lot of money who can afford prime land lots still do not wish to invest in animal-proof trash cans?
As to the "formerly rural/pastoral" areas... if I'm not mistaken, those only been around for a little over 1.5 hundred of years, after quick-and-dirty extermination of the original population that lived more-or-less in harmony with environment... just a thought.
