I watched Huell since his Videolog days. Even when his hyper enthusiasm bugged me, I still could not help but like him. The one thing that did bug me about him, but also made me laugh, was his tendency to touch and grab things without permission, like when he snatched the original In-n-Out recipe book out of the guy's hands.

I watched Huell in my younger days just to crack up at the things he found interesting:

"What do you call this ... dirt? AMAZING STUFF! I never knew this was dirt until I came upon it. WOW! "

My parents, RIP, loved his shows for some reason ... and they hardly understood English.

When we first moved to California in 2006, we were looking for some offbeat places to go and visit. I had been to LA and SF quite a few times, but wanted to see other stuff.

Watching TV one Saturday I saw Huell on the local PBS station, and they had shows about Eureka and Ferndale. They looked interesting, and kind of what I was looking to see.

We made the trip, and weren't disappointed...thanks to Huell.

His shows were always so fun, and he'd dig up the most interesting places you didn't know were right there all along.

And he was a nice guy. We always knew when he dropped by the station, the voice was unmistakable.

The official cause of death was prostate cancer. I still watch his shows on pbs. RIP.
