Is it $97 Billion like Jerry Brown said?

Or is he lying and it is really $145.8 Billion???

Or is it really $225 Billion???

Quote:
When Capitol politicians and others talk or write about "the budget," they are referring to the "general fund," which Gov. Jerry Brown proposes to be a bit over $97 billion in the next fiscal year.

However, that's never been the entire budget.

Whenever it's passed by the Legislature, it also includes "special funds," as well as "bond funds" and federal funds. And there's been so much recent jockeying on how the state keeps its books that referring merely to the general fund as the budget is not only incomplete, but downright misleading to the voting and taxpaying public.

Nothing new under the sun! During my 18 years as a political and legislative analyst for the state, including fiscal and economic analyses of the issues, I routinely doubled the deficit forecast by the politicians, including the Governor and HIS Dept. of Finance, and was almost always spot-on.

Remember the old adage about how you know a politician is lying. In CA just a twitch of the lips is all that is needed.

Unlike politicians elsewhere ... for instance, Tennessee:

Don't most states mislead in their budgets though? Why is California a special case?

Which does nothing to diminish its truth regarding CA. But then again, deflection is rarely effective.

By the way, that trait is pretty much universal among politicians.

It isn't. It just has larger figures coupled with more over-spending.

There was no deflection. My comment was an entirely direct correction of the inference that somehow California politicians are more liars than elsewhere. They're not. Politicians are politicians wherever one finds them. It is, therefore, not an attempt at diminution of truth, but an equalization of truth. It is common practice on this forum that conservatives try to continuously isolate California's problems as somehow genetically distinct from other state life forms ... to make the case that California is essentially and completely and irretrievably flawed.

Nonsense.
