At the Chevron Station by work. What is the excuse this time? The expected travel surge for Groundhog day? The Superbowl? It's Friday?

Rather than repeat what I heard on KFI this morning:

Jeffrey Spring of the Automobile Club of Southern California attributed the climbing prices to the usual culprits - high oil prices, Middle East tensions, local refinery incidents and refineries being brought down for maintenance as they prepare to produce their summer blend of gas.

Rob Schlichting, a spokesman for the California Energy Commission, refined that even more.

"An increase in the cost of crude oil from the Alaskan North Slope accounted for 7.5 cents of that 10 cent increase," he said.

California gets 12 percent of its oil from the North Slope, 38 percent from in-state operations and the remainder from foreign sources.

One gas station changes its price and you think the whole state's prices went up?

$3.59 across the freeway from me. ~10 cent jump. Not thread worthy.

I don't know the reason for the price change.

But your name makes me want to listen to some Van Halen.

In honor of the price jump I present Jump (I prefer Diamond Dave to Sammy as frontman):

I also heard that gasoline prices are expected to rise. According to this, gas was averaging $3.585 one month ago in Orange County, and today it’s at $3.942.

Some analysts think that speculators are helping to fuel (no pun intended) the increase in gas prices:

Funny how gas prices never drop as quickly as they rise...

A one-day rise of 17 cents in L.A. Sometimes it takes a week to drop a penny.

They did. Along with the whole nation's. Using gasbuddy's numbers, they average national price is up 15 cents from a week ago and 20 cents from a month ago.

Of course, California prices also fell some 60 cents in November and December of last year during which time the usual "they sky is falling, the sky is falling; the prices are fixed and the sky is falling" crowd was conspicuously silent. Hmmm.
