I am going to retire at the end on 2013 and we are looking to move from Humboldt County to somewhere that is warmer and it does not rain as much.
We moved to Humboldt County from Fresno becuase of the poor air quality in Fresno and my husbands asthma. My DH is now disabled and has arthritis that bothers him everytime it rains. The cold and damp is also a problem for him. I wish he liked the desert, because Palm Springs has everything we need.
What we need in a place is: clean air, has too be less then 1500' in altitude because of his asthma, warm weather with lower rainfall then Humboldt (40") due to his arthritis. I am also looking for good medical services for him. Medical was one of the reasons that Maui is no longer on our list. We would also like to be able to get an acre or two, so we are living on top of our neighbors, but need to be an hour or less from a larger town that has shopping.
We can afford $600,000-$700,000 for housing and I do not need a job since we can live on his disablitiy income of $65,000 a year.
The main reason to stay in Cailf is my mother is getting up there is age and I would like to be close to the Bay Area, but not too close.
Any good ideas and the pros and cons for the town. Thanks for all your help!

Ventura is foggy and chilly often. Inland would be better. Fillmore and Santa Paula might have more acreage for you. You could also go farther south to Thousand Oaks, Moorpark or Simi Valley, if you can give up the acreage idea. Good shopping, healthcare, warmer and sunny, low rainfall and altitude, and a short hop to L.A. if you need world-class medical care.
Check the Ventura County thread here.
