Fresno. Hey, its in the middle of the state (there's a reason is a big convention site). Yeah, its not glamorous, but it does have a very large state university and lots of young people as a result (and they're friendlier than most of California). Its inexpensive too. Plus the Sierra Nevada and three famous national parks are a short drive away.

O.K. coastal folks - you can quit groaning and laughing now.

I would suggest Santa Clarita, maybe Valencia or Stevenson Ranch...It would put you right off of the I-5 which is the main artery running north-south through all of California. The 126 junctions there and it heads west and puts you over toward the Central Coast in about one hour. Plus, you can access the desert cities in about an hour too if you go up the 14. Beyong that, the 14 will take you up the Eastern Sierra to Mammoth.

You would also be 15-20 minutes from the clubs/party scene/nightlife in Hollywood and San Fernando Valley and, of course, living in Santa Clarita gives you access to all of Los Angeles.

But the nice thing about Santa Clarita is that it is suburban and as quiet as you would want it to be when you come home at night or after a long day of driving. It will make your time in California very fun and may even entice you to stay longer

It all depends on what you like to do for fun. Clubbing, beaches, mountains, etc. I know there are a huge amount of Michiganders that relocated to North LA county, Lancaster, Palmdale, Acton, etc. It is convenient for them because they minutes from the mountains, and only 45 minutes from the San Fernando Valley of LA. If you like outdoor recreation, you cannot beat N LA county.

Check out the Belmont Shore neighborhood of Long Beach. Lots of things to do right there. Why set yourself up for a long commute if you don't need to.

Good Luck to you!
