If there weren't any jobs, Charles, the towns wouldn't exist.

You may be thinking in terms of $75,000 jobs or higher paying. The OP didn't have that sort of job in mind, she was looking for something more modest.

You're right. I was generalizing.

When I drove through Humboldt County on vacation, I got the impression that there were some affordable areas, but I didn't get the feeling that there were a plethora of jobs - any thoughts? That area is second on my places to move list (after northern Nevada). Thanks!

I'm an elementary school teacher moving out of CA for many reasons. The cost of living is crazy here. There are many ghetto areas in and near the cities. If you live on the outskirts, public transportation will be limited. The weather is very, very nice. What you also get is gang colors, graffiti, car thefts, home break ins, etc. If would rethink. . .and research heavily before coming out to CA as the dream has faded many years ago.

It depends on where you go. CA is a big state with a lot of areas to choose from. Not all areas are bad and not all areas are good. I'd venture to say, it's like this anywhere you go. Why, I'll bet there are good places AND bad places in (gasp!) every other state!!!

Sadie 85,
Hey, have you made anymore decisions on california? I too am trying to relocate there, or at least thinking about it. These darn forums are freaking me out. I've got family out there, and they'll help me get started but with me being in an Administration as well, I don't know I'll be able to cut the costs unless I get a roommate. Not planning on buying a house just yet, because according to what I've been reading, it will be too expensive. Sheesh! Anyway, just curious if you've made anymore decisions since October.

For herline of work -preschool teacher I dont see the need to go somewhere major like la sf sd. Sacramento seems like a fine choice. there are some really nice areas that are affordable and half the price of the bay area.

Your impression is correct; good jobs hard to come by, lots of minimum wage jobs. California Min Wage is now $8 an hour but I wouldn't try to raise a family on that , even here in the "cheap" part of the state. Try the Humboldt Times-Standard online for classifieds. The two personnel agencies , Express Personnel and Sequoia Personnel have their listings online and will give you an idea. Good luck!

Thanks for the tip! Currently getting by on minimum wage here in WA so I will have to go to one of those cost of living comparison sites. Already found out that my minimum wage job in WA will have to go up to 9 per hr to make it in Reno. So will be interesting to compare and see what they have to say about the Humboldt area.
