The paper bags I get from Von's and Trader Joe's both say 40% PCW recycled paper. It wouldn't surprise me to hear that paper bags are much worse for the environment than plastic bags (which supposedly take very little energy to manufacture.) Recycling uses more energy than it saves for everything except aluminum I believe. I don't see nearly as many people bringing reusable bags to the supermarket here in Santa Monica as you would think. So the skeptic in me thinks the plastic bag ban is pervesely worse for the environment.

Paper will recycle itself without you doing anything... Its compostable.. Toss them in with your vegetable scraps and turn the pile a few times and you have rich potting soil to grow in...

Paper is from a renewable resource... Trees.... We grow them just as any other crop and they lock up carbon which helps counteract climate change... They also take in vast amounts of C02 and give off O2 which we breath.... It is a good partnership with trees... It is sustainable...

On the other hand plastic is from oil... They only way to make it go away is to recycle. Waste bags persist in the environment for a very long time causing hazard for many things. Oil is a finite resource with many polluting attributes to it.. It is NOT sustainable... It contributes to climate change.

This should be a no brainer for anyone with the most rudimentary understanding of basic science.

Don't get me wrong, I use plenty of plastic, and part of my living depends on it... I can not use paper to cover greenhouses, and glass is too expensive... Plastic is the way to go..for that.. Grocery shopping on the other hand.. It is a small step to just get in the habit of taking your own bags... Really no big deal.... A small step in the direction of reducing waste and using less oil based products.

You're speaking science on City-Data. You just lost your audience.

Then you'll need a plastic bag to keep your edible bag clean.

Sometimes somethings do need to be double bagged.

They're for one time use and the frying will kill the germs. You will be able to refrigerate of freeze them if you don't want to consume right when you get back home from the store. We'll also make a pet food version in case you and your human friends and family can't eat them all yourselves.

So it looks like you think that making paper bags, made out of partially recycled products, available as an alternative to plastic bags would be acceptable.

As far as taking your own bags, that is anyone's option. But on the other hand, I don't see why recycled paper bags shouldn't be an acceptable replacement for plastic bags (if banned).

Humans are fouling the natural environment far faster than trees can be grown to replace the felled ones used for paper bags. Carbons emitted exceed the capacity of the carbon sink if we continue to accelerate deforestation, worldwide, which results in pollution and climate change.

Your own bag > paper bag > plastic bag.

Your own bag > paper bag > plastic bag.
Warning, another science alert. Heads will explode.
