As a general rule the worse traffic is between 5.30AM to 9AM and then between 2PM and 6.30PM. I have been towing a trailer once a month to LA and I try to arrive before 2pm or after 6.30pm.

Got it.

So if we left our place at 9:30am or so on Monday morning, we'd miss morning rush to the bridge in North Bay. We'd meet up with I-5 around 11:30am. Probably grab some lunch or something and get back on the road around noon.

If we planned to stop for something to eat around 5 or 5:30, would that put us in LA right at about 6:30 or so? Did I just completely make all that up? If not, does that sound like the best plan to everyone?

What about the return trip - same days and times?

I agree with Senno (8 to 9 hours and I have made in one piece many times!) and that's a very good plan to minimize your traffic woes here.

Just saw your last post - that really does look like a good plan and doing it in reverse when you leave should work well too.

Cool, many thanks to everyone.

What's northbound traffic like out of LA on Saturday morning? I'm just thinking, if we drive down on Monday, get there Monday night, stay T/W/Th/Fr nights and drive back Saturday. Or is Saturday heading back north just suicide?

Sounds about right with the requisite pit stops along the way and dinner in Santa Clarita at the In-n-Out, hehe.

Take in the Anderson's Pea Green soup (is it still called that?) along the way if ya need a snack, hehe.

You would encounter some traffic Saturday AM as folks get out of town for the weekend but in my experience really hasn't been too bad. Once you're past Valencia (Six Flags is there) it usually starts to flow pretty well again.

I buzzed by there last year and Anderson's was still there, wish I had time to stop then....

Best time to travel to LA is Sunday morning as early as possible. Same for best time to leave LA.

A big determining factor as well is where you go after you come down the hill into San Fernando.

We drive from Marin Co. to Blythe on the AZ border (don't ask) several times a year in one day and then eastward from there. We leave Marin on Sunday morning at 6 AM and merge on I-5 about 7:30 AM. There is next to no traffic on I-80, and 580 leaving the Bay Area to connect with I-5. We are over the grapevine and into Santa Clarita about noon. No breakfast stop, just Clifbar and hard boiled egg at the rest stop. Not much traffic on I-5 southbound on Sunday AM, especially large semi trucks. Then across LA on 210 but no back ups. Then connect on I-10 east.

Bottom line, leave Sonoma VERY early Sunday morning and you should not encounter any backups getting out of the Bay Area to I-5 nor much congestion in the greater LA area.
