We are in a small town in FL and considering a move to CA (either LA or OC area). We would like to know the minimum salary we need to earn in order to live without too much stress.
I went to some websites but the difference were only about $20,000 for equivalent salary between where we live now and in LA or other cities near there. This seems too little, maybe?
With different tax rate and possibly additional taxes in CA, I want to know what the living expenses will be.
We don't have any debt or car payment but have 3 kids (but we live frugally mostly. My main concern is housing expense - significant expense compare to here). Also our projected income might be less than $100,000 in CA.

Yeah, the big difference will be housing. How do you kids feel about all sharing a room?

just type in for search......cost of living comparison calculator

There are several available, and all come up with almost exactly the same answer for comparisons between your city, and any city in California. California cities will vary often considerably depending on what part of California.

In many of them, you may get a $20,000 raise going to California and find you are in effect taking a big pay cut after adjusting for cost of living.

Go to GeoCommons for median income adjusted for cost of living by state. The problem is, it does not cover the difference in cost of living for different metro areas, which can be considerable more.
