I know.

And I have considered Livermore to be Bay Area as Nekkidfish moved there and she wants to go to a nude beach, which is pretty cool. And I took that into consideration as well. But not points east.

May god have mercy on the poor souls in Stockton that commute to the Bay Area.

I didn't know that the DC CSA had passed us up. That puts Philly even further down. I think we passed Philly back in the 80s or early 90s.

The SF Bay area CSA or CMSA as it was, was #4 for a long time until DC combined with Baltimore and Bostons got enlarged as well.

Thanks! Curious what is your source?

There are bordering areas between the Sacto Metro and the Bay Area Metro such as Vacaville, Fairfield, Napa, and Vallejo that are within the Bay Area Metro in most stats, but that always have had a Sacramento connection. I'm wondering if the commuter numbers reflect that as well. I would think Vacaville would have the largest commuter percentage to Sac over the other cities mentioned.

The commuter percentages for Stockton to the Bay Area would help explain why Stockton thinks of itself as a "Bay Area Town". Regardless of the commuter percentages Stockton is or "was" a Central Valley town in heart and soul and I mean that in a good way before the high crime rates and unemployment issues.

Stockton always has been part of the Sacramento Media Market (#19 in the country last time I looked) and I think Sacramento does a better job on reporting on the real Stockton. The Sacramento media has a more balanced view on Stockton because it thinks of it as one of it's own; whereas, the Bay Area media just thinks of Stockton has that horrible Central Valley exurb and focuses all its attention on the negative.

I agree with this. I think the difference is that valley cities don't cross employ as much, but the bay area is so expensive that the valley cities have become a natural spillover area.

We passed Philly in the 1980s.

DC passed us in 2001 when they merged with Baltimore.

Boston passed us in 2003 when they merged with Providence.

Now in 2013 the Bay Area has overtaken Boston again.

Chicago, DC and the Bay Area are now all on their way to 10 million.

If current growth is consistent with 2011 growth rates(latest year available), then the Bay Area has about 8.475 million in 2013 and will have 9.5 million in ten years.
