It is in northern California near the Nevada border.
If your visit will be limited to southern California and the Mojave Desert, getting to Bodie will be out of your way.
However, if you are interested in ghost towns - Bodie should not be missed.

Calico ghost town is one.
I believe there is something called the "Early Man Site" nearby. I suppose that is is some kind of archeaoligical dig. Both are near Barstow.
Zzyzx Springs is off the 15. It used to be a resort and now is a study site for desert habitats operated by the University of California.
Afton Canyon is supposed to be a really neat place, but I have never been there.
West of Las Vegas there is Red Rock Canyon - a very impressive place.
On your way to Las vegas you ought to stop in Baker to rehydrate, but also to see the world's tallest thermometor.

I'm not sure of the mileage, but Afton Canyon is between Barstow and Baker. It is east of the Calico area and before you reach Zzyzx Road.
You want to look for the Afton Canyon Road exit off of the 15 and then will travel south to reach it.
I have never been there, and am giving you directions from my map.
Everything I have read or heard says that it is a very interesting and unique place.
