Hello all,
I am a Dutch man coming to California in summer. I am very interested in checking out the ghost towns and gold mines in the mojave desert. Are there some that are not too dangerous and close to the 15/40/10 freeways?
Thanks
Jan

You should visit the Calico ghost town off of the 15 near Barstow.

Bodie is much further north but worth the trip.

Bring water and be careful around any mineshafts that you encounter.

I imagine that you want to return to the Netherlands when your visit is over!

Bodie is off of Highway 395 just north of Yosemite National Park near Mono Lake.

It is in northern California near the Nevada border.

If your visit will be limited to southern California and the Mojave Desert, getting to Bodie will be out of your way.

However, if you are interested in ghost towns - Bodie should not be missed.

If you did not read my last post, I am also doing Las Vegas, Zion, Bryce, Grand Canyon. Do you know of any off the road attractions on the way?

Calico ghost town is one.

I believe there is something called the "Early Man Site" nearby. I suppose that is is some kind of archeaoligical dig. Both are near Barstow.

Zzyzx Springs is off the 15. It used to be a resort and now is a study site for desert habitats operated by the University of California.

Afton Canyon is supposed to be a really neat place, but I have never been there.

West of Las Vegas there is Red Rock Canyon - a very impressive place.

On your way to Las vegas you ought to stop in Baker to rehydrate, but also to see the world's tallest thermometor.

I'm not sure of the mileage, but Afton Canyon is between Barstow and Baker. It is east of the Calico area and before you reach Zzyzx Road.

You want to look for the Afton Canyon Road exit off of the 15 and then will travel south to reach it.

I have never been there, and am giving you directions from my map.

Everything I have read or heard says that it is a very interesting and unique place.
