So apparently, it is now illegal to use your smartphone as a driving GPS, instead of a Garmin, in CA now?? In other words, Google Navigator is now illegal in CA?

Does this make any sense? Is Google just going to take this lying down in its home turf?

I have a DIY mount for my cell phone. Can I use it as a navigation system if it in the mount? How is it any different than using a navigation system integrated into the car since they're both touch screens?

Doing anything that requires you to look away from the roadway, even for a second, should be illegal... The judge made the right call

So outlaw mirrors, paper maps, radios, and climate controls.

If you don't have the ability to look away from the roadway for one second and be safe doing so then you might want to consider ending your driving days for good.

The vehicle code, for several years, could have been interpreted in this way - all that has changed is a judge in Fresno County heard a challenge to a 23123 cite, in which it was argued that the VC only applied to talking/texting/etc, and not mobile app use. The judge disagreed.

Now there is case law allowing this cite... But only if you're playing with your phone while underway. Nowhere does it say you can't set a route and follow it without manipulating your phone.

Please don't confuse this case with banning cell phone navigation - quite simply it allowed officers to cite for operators manipulating their cell phones (playing games, entering nav destinations, looking up yelp reviews, whatever) while driving. Viewing your phones nav screen is still fine.

To be fair - what's the difference between entering an address and texting?

23123. (a) A person shall not drive a motor vehicle while using a wireless telephone unless that telephone is specifically designed and configured to allow hands-free listening and talking, and is used in that manner while driving.

I can think of about 10 things right now that used to be legal and now aren't here. A couple of them are pretty big. It's still not enough to get me to move.

I did move but not for that reason although looking back, I have to admit it's not something I miss. However, in the overall scheme of things, it's still outweighed by the positives California has to offer.
