I believe the best area is somewhere "outside" of Stockton.
Lodi isn't too bad and it's close enough, if your job has to be in Stockton.

A really handy tool is crimemapping.com Put in any address and set the search for the last six months under the dates column.

It will show you all of the crime that has been reported in the local area of the address in the last six months. You can also put in a city name and get all of the data for the city, although in cities with higher amounts of crime, the system will tell you to zoom in if there is too much crime to show on the map all at once.

The data used comes from local law enforcement.

If you click on the "detailed report" icon on the top of the map, it will give you a list of all of the reported crimes in the area, which is sometimes easier to digest when the area has a large number of incidents.

Interpret the data as you will, but when you see an area with a lot of violent crimes and drug-related arrests, that's usually an area to avoid unless you simply have no other choice.

If you are moving from a place where you feel comfortable living, do a search for your current area, and then compare it to where you are considering moving. That will give you an idea of how different or similar the new location will be to where you're coming from.

Of course, the maps only show REPORTED crimes not necessarily ALL criminal activity, but it is a good way to compare different areas and make a decision about whether an area is right for you and/or your family.

Still, I would guess that looking at actual crime stats from law enforcement is probably going to be more reliable information about an area than just asking people which areas are safe or not safe, as few people are aware of all of the crimes being committed/reported in a particular area (or even their own neighborhoods) over a period of time.

You do not want to live in Stockton if you're looking for a safe laid back city. High crime rate, virtually no safe/decent areas. I would definitely reconsider and look into Ripon, Manteca or Lodi possibly. Just giving you some honest advice.
