This is a more subjective question, as San Fran and LA has equal amounts of diversity. But which city feels more cosmopolitan to you?

Comparing LA and SF has always been a challenging task. LA is a typical sunbelt city where as SF feels more like a northern, non sunbelt city. Indeed it's at the edge of that arbitrary sunbelt line. Comparing such places is not easy. Since this is City-Data I have to ask this question; are you comparing just the cities or the metro areas? Let's clear that up first.

Los Angeles is spread out and not walkable

San Francisco is compact and walkable

I have never considered any portion of Los Angeles cosmopolitan, SF yes, quite so, one of the four livable cities on the continent.

I'm down with the SF town, best scene around, no reason to frown in the SF town!

The two are incomparable; SF = better weather, scenery to beat the band, cool cable cars, workable, walkable size, no ugly sprawl, and last but by no means least, it has easy access to Berkeley, Oakland, Marin county, and jobs. Diversity is all around. I could be wrong but it looks to me like SF denizens have a higher level of education in general, and are well-traveled. That's one factor that makes a cosmopolitan vibe.

both are world class cities with large immigrant populations and diverse economies. both have landmark architecture and large populations that spread miles from the city center. both have top notch cultural opportunities and restaurants. both cities also suffer from typical urban ills. while SF is a more traditional big city, i don't think that necessarily makes it more cosmopolitan. considering that, i think i'd say they are about even.

These are undeniably cosmopolitan.
Whether L.A. or SF is moreso than the other? Entirely subjective.
