My kids have been in schools that emphasize project-based learning (think Reggio Emilia, Expeditionary Learning programs). They love school and have learned a lot. Are there schools in or around Fresno that follow either of these models?

Not that I have heard of. You could try contact the CUSD and FUSD and ask, although I am guessing that you will probably have more chances of finding them in the private sector.

I would contact both school districts. More likely to get a concrete answer vs. here.

I looked into it, and the most I could come up with is CART (a joint high school with FUSD) and the CUSD High Schools are project based learning. I cannot tell if the elementary schools and junior highs are project based.

I don't know about FUSD, or any private schools.

I recommend you stay in CUSD though. Your children will do quite well in the school district.

My niece and nephew attend CUSD and are doing great.

Thanks, all. It seems like there are some EL schools in what I'll loosely call central California, but not many. My daughter's public school is an EL school and it seems to be working well (kids and teachers like it, school performing very well in terms of testing and other measures).

My sister finally called back. And she's not heard "project based learning" being used as a buzzword at the school my niece and nephew attend.

And I don't see it referenced in online material available, except for the HS's as noted.

Thank you for asking. You're right - in places where it's being used there's often buzz, both good and bad. (Good: it seems to foster student engagement; bad: it doesn't necessarily prepare students to perform well on standardized tests.)

I haven't been able to get information, but hope to get more when I'm in the area in a few weeks. I will try to post more then if you think the information would still be useful then.
