The place has exploded over the last 20-30 years. In the eighties it was definitely close to being Oklahoma, but not anymore.

Great schools? Are you kidding! Try looking at greatschools.com. Then look at the state API scores versus other communities. Holy crap... it's a disaster.

In the 80's? I grew up there in the 80's... it was NOTHING like Oklahoma. Do you, or did you ever, even live there?

Hi folks,

I have a job opportunity in Visalia and will likely be moving from central CT to Visalia, CA in june! I visited Visalia a few years ago and while speaking with a local was told that the downsides of the area are poor air quality in summer, average schools although some stand out as good, and the summer heat! Crime was mostly in surrounding small towns I was told. Is that still true? Was wondering if Visalia changed for better or worse over the last 3-4 years?? Thanks!

Just a heads-up, this thread was begun in 2013 and the last post before yours was in 2015. You may wish to begin your own thread.

youll find yourself going to Fresno as the closest big city--its the 5th largest city in california. in the event visalia doesnt have a certain store/amenity. its about 40 mins away. bakersfield would be the next about an hour away south.

Crime is pretty low for inland CA
Air is bad everywhere In inland CA. The closer to the mountains you are, the better the air gets(live in eastern visalia)
Summer heat is harsh but overstated by people. 2.5-3.5 months of heat, 1 month of cold weather, and the rest of the year is pleasant. Compare visalia weather right now to Connecticut weather.
Not much has changed, but people are excited about building light rail to connect to the high speed rail and possibly to other stops. Gl
