When I moved to CA, I was really surprised with how diverse it actually was. So not surprising.

At some point, some Californians switched from "The Yellow Peril" to "The Brown Peril"

Great. Same game, different players, really.

It's all about the skin?

It's really about what's between those two ears.

There are those dark-skinned foreigners whom I would trust because they love this country and people.

There are those "white" native Americans whom I would not trust because they despise this country and people in general, even when they speak piously of their love for various groups. Just a dog-and-pony show.

Packaging, while not incidental, is not the whole story.

"Between the ears"?
For me, it's what's in the heart ...

Some interesting thoughts in the responses. Living in L.A ,especially where I live now this is not surprising. The particular area I live in is over 70% hispanic and has been probably for years.

Also I saw this from NPR yesterday. In Houston, America's Diverse Future Has Already Arrived - capradio.org

Apparently Houston is now the most diverse city in America according to a Rice University study ( http://kinder.rice.edu/uploadedFiles...rse%202-13.pdf)

Funny that so many people still think of it a place filled with white cowboys.

Most of the "dark skinned foreigners" are more "American" than the whites. Well to be truthful they are a mixed bag as in Mestizo. But the Native lineage tends to rule after a few generations. Why fight nature?

People think of Houston either as being as white as Seattle or being as black as Detroit.

Joel Kotkin laments that Houston has replaced Los Angeles as a favored destination for Latin American immigrants, due to Houston's economy being better and its policies being less insane.

As for the original topic: I don't see it making any difference.

That is true. Also, Asians with lower to mid economic levels are increasingly skipping CA and heading to the Lone Star State. CA is getting less and less middle class.

Huh? What is "more American?"

Kotkin dreads what some on these boards probably celebrate, that illegal immigrants don't want to move to L.A. anymore. As they're motivated by the same things that motivate other people, and are not some other species like some know-nothings think, this should come as no surprise.

Houston's also attracted many African-Americans from California, ironic considering how many blacks fled Jim Crow in Texas for California during the Great Migrations.
