As a native Californian whose family on both sides was in California since the late 1800s, I am very familiar with what it was like since I entered the work force after leaving the Navy in 1954. Compared to today, we had good jobs and opportunities available. We could buy our first home, with an average salary as I and everyone I know did. Our home payments, were less than renting an apartment. The cost of living, was reasonable at the time, not out of sight like it is today. The school systems were considered excellent for our children. The future was bright back then. People were not running scared.
When the young generation looks around today, they do not have the opportunities we had and there is good reason that they are not optimistic and positive about their future. Many are starting to realize, they will have to leave the state to go to where things are much more positive, with lower unemployment rates, home prices low enough they will be able to buy homes for their families, have good schools for their children, and feel they can prosper. They can even take lower paid jobs in many other places, and still after considering the cost of living, have a much higher standard of living including the ability to buy a home, etc., that would be impossible for them in California.
Don't blame them for not being optimistic, and and have a negative attitude. It is the conditions of the times they are living in, in California. They do not see the bright future, we saw in the past. You may be doing well yourself, but the majority of the young generation is not.
You make some good points. This all started with us Gen X'ers. It started good for us then quickly went into the hole it's in just not as deep as now. Since I was in my 20's the hole has only gotten deeper. I remember renting my own place without roommates, part time making less than 9 bucks an hour. Gen X, Gen Y and Millennials will never have what our parents had at the same age.

Yeah, like polio, measles, mumps, rubella, whooping cough, rotary-dial land phones (only), 3-channels of tv to choose from, no internet / computers (to waste time on), AM radio only in cars, oppressive religious and moral codes, racial / sexual segregation / discrimination (legal and otherwise), rampant subliminal conditioning for myriad harmful products (like cigarettes) to addict the masses, legal freedom to pollute the environment with cancer-causing toxins, suffocating air-pollution in urban areas, the real threat of all out nuclear world war, ... the list goes on.
But man o man, I could buy my first Craftsman bungalow house for $16,500 with a monthly payment of $167 ... out of my $550 a month full-time work salary to support my home-maker wife and baby while I went to college full-time and shared our 1 battered VW Beetle with each other after returning home from being blown up in a war.
(I'd do it again though.)

It's the baby boomers. They refuse to retire. Pretty much anything bad in America is the fault of the baby boomers.

Ya, Old Trader made a few good points... Too bad he is so blinded by his disdain for California and his right wing politics. LOL....
So are the Millennials doomed? That is up to them... Will they be a generation that takes control over their destiny? Will they be a generation that stands together, not being divided by the political puppet masters?
Will the generation force the change they see best for their nation?
I am not hearing it in this thread or seeing it in younger folks...
IMHO, occupy wall street was a feeble attempt at making change.... Make it happen young people, this is YOUR country...
(For the record, I am a very young Boomer.... Sure to be screwed by the younger generations once their voices are not being eclipsed by the massive numbers of older Boomers..)
Personally the concentration of wealth is what you should go after... What Goldman Sacs doubled their profits this reporting period... Doing what? Shuffling money out of your pocket and into theirs? Get that money back into the common mans pockets, where he can put it too work growing a small business.
Close down the multi nationals, bring back small family owned business, jobs that pay OK, but give kids a company to build on... (Not a kick in the pants, or a cheap watch, after a career of service.)
Sorry Young ones, your parents whored themselves out for a few more instant bucks in their pockets, and for a good stock portfolio. The American soul has been sold to the highest bidder...
I wish you luck... Don't point fingers at one another, as the generations since the boomers have done..... You can see what that got us....
Likely you will be stuck in this popping post boom bubble... It will be your children that rebuild it after the boomers are dead and their wealth has been squandered.
Sorry, I do not see such a rosy outlook for you... But DOOMED...NO... Not if you get busy taking action now!

have you checked the laws in some states lately? We in CA tend to forget that most of the country isn't where we are now which could be in part why today's millennials are reluctant to leave.

This hasn't gone away are you serious null??? As recently as 1995 we came within 8 minutes of Nuclear War due to a miss-communication. Thanks goodness Boris Yeltzin wasn't drunk at that time. Even today, Russia has admitted that it has no idea where all of its Nuclear weapons went after the USSR broke up.

HEY! I retired LONG ago! LONG ago! And worked for myself almost exclusively since the military in the late 60's. Y'all youngsters go out and find your own struggle to slog through. Expecting others to hire you baby-faced punks for big money right outta school just because you took out big loans and partied your ways through college. Why the nerve ... Well I never ... what's the world coming to these days ... when I was a sprout I hiked to and from school uphill (both ways!) through blizzards (12 months of the years), carrying firewood to heat the school room, and still had to get home in time to milk the cows and shovel the barn and feed the chickens and weed the subsistence garden ... lawdy lawdy lawdy life was hard back then and these children of today just got no respects ... need a switch taken to their bare backsides and have their shoes taken away ... if I hear one more .............

Well, you missed the realities of everything I mentioned -- but you finally got the point ... As I said earlier in this thread: every generation is the basically the same, and just deals with what's on its plate at the time. And kvetches about it until it makes me want to puke.
