A friend is having a big birthday weekend up there in a few weeks. I'm not especially interested in wine. What all is there to do and see? I like hiking, historical spots, good (but reasonably priced) restaurants. I'm definately going to make time for the Bay Area. Just curious what Sonoma has to offer. Thanks for any info!

Are you looking for things to do i n Sonoma County? Or Sonoma the town? There are plenty to do in both but I don't want to give you information for something on the complete opposite end of town that you'll be on

Bodega Bay is always worth a day trip. Lots of good kayaking: ocean, Russian River, Estero Americana down to the ocean. Hiking... I haven't really done any hiking in Sonoma County, but there's a ton of it.

You didn't say whether or not you liked beer but...there are many good breweries in Sonoma.

in the Santa Rosa area:

* weekly farmers market in downtown (used to be Wed nights, not sure what day it's on now)


out towards the coast:
* Ace hard cider
* Kozlowski Farms (Kozlowski Farms - Sonoma County Classics, Specialty Foods from the Russian River Valley)
* drive thru old town Sebastopol & check out the art work in people's yards (Visit the Amiot Sculpture Garden in Sebastopol, CA)
* check out the old school that was in "The Birds"
* Korbel champagne & garden tour
* Armstrong Grove
* historic Fort Ross

this is just the tip of the iceburg of things do to. it really depends on what part of town you will be in. from santa rosa to sonoma, it's about an hours drive. from santa rosa to the coast, it's about an hours drive. santa rosa to fort ross is ~1.5hrs.
