Bought my first-ever owned house there back in the 70s. Now I'd probably pay someone to take it off my hands.

All this talk about San Bernardino reminds me of the time I did one of those "best place to retire" surveys. San Bernardino was at the top of the list! Whaaaaat? That's one of the last places I'd choose to live!

Visalia, home of gun shows and not much else! (Apologies to any Visalians! )

The worst place to live in California, or anywhere else for that matter, is someplace you really dislike being. That will be purely an individual discernment.

Default If Lancaster was so bad it would have been put on the list.

If Lancaster was so bad it would have been put on the list. Most of those places listed are far worse places to live than Lancaster. Lancaster is very nice compared to a lot of those places.

Where are California City and Salton City? How about Barstow, Calexico and Blyth? Or are they now considered prime real estate?

I haven't been to, much less lived in, most of those cities. So I'm probably not qualified to answer. That being said I did have to spend some time in the Imperial Valley for work about 10 years ago, and I'd much rather live in a "nice" area in a city like El Centro (it DOES exist) than say, East Palo Alto.

So I think city-by-city comparisons are difficult because most cities have nice areas that are probably better to live in than the ghetto areas of larger cities.

That being said if someone held a gun to my head and demanded an answer for worst city in California, just based on observation it would be one of those smaller rural cities in the Imperial Valley (Brawley? Holtville?) Man, those towns are just sad...

And I know that cities like Richmond, Stockton, Oakland and Capitol City Sacramento [which pretnends to be safer, without publicizing accurate crime rates] have higher personal crime rates per capita, than stereotyped So Cal areas like Los Angeles, Watts, Compton or Inglewood. But I define a broad term like 'worst' on more than just crime rates. I dont know of any California cities that are without police departments or crime. But a decent quality of life can still be maintained, depending on how smart you are.

Santa Barbara, and especially the Montecito area. Why, just the other day some punk in a Bentley almost ran me over.
