I purchased an RV a few months ago, just as a backup in case of whatever. I see a lot of people living in RV's in my home town, driving from spot to spot each night. To be quite honest, I don't like the looks of it, and I don't like the thought that I would have to be one of those people. I'm sure they're alright, but I just can't imagine anyone is happy when they show up to camp out in front of their property, and I just couldn't get comfortable with the idea of living on the curb for any period of time.

So the idea I've got is to purchase property to use the RV on. It's self-contained, so it can be out in the boonies where there aren't any neighbors, but I just don't know what the laws are regarding using the land like that. Do I need land that's zoned in a particular way or...?

Anyone know how to do this legally?

Depends on the building codes where the property would be located. Some will allow you to keep the RV on the property only while you're building a structure. Some want you to remove the wheels and anchor it to the ground. So, it really depends on the zoning/building codes. Or it depends on if you get caught. But, if you get caught, now you have land and you can't live on it unless you build.

There are some pretty cheap RV parks, though, in some really pretty areas. I've also looked at doing this. Depending on the RV park, they can even include Wi-Fi.

You might check out some of the campground ownership programs. There is a "membership" campground like that around here. I have no idea about costs or restrictions and it doesn't look like a place I would want to be in. (Too many folks in close proximity) but maybe it would be something you might.

I did some more research, and another option would be to buy an RV lot. I didn't even know you could do this:

RV Lots For Sale

You could also look for a county with no building codes. I would assume then you could also just park an RV on your property.

Here's one in CO:

Delta County, CO - Official Website - Building Information

I did search for somewhere in CA, but didn't have luck, though I quit after trying for just a few minutes.
