How close to the beach do you need to be?

Lots of jobs in the San Jose area. I live in Santa Clara, great schools, safe. 30 minutes to Santa Cruz and the beach. You'll hit the Santa Cruz mountains before you hit the beach on Hwy 17 (starts out as Highway 880, turns into Hwy 17).

Cupertino is supposed to have top notch schools. Cupertino is pretty and safe, same approx distance to mountains/redwoods and ocean.

Here's a Craigslist search for just condos max $2500 in Santa Clara and Cupertino only:

SF bay area apts/housing for rent classifieds "condo" - craigslist

Here's a list of hospitals in Santa Clara County:

Hospitals in Santa Clara County - Emergency Services - County of Santa Clara

I have a male nurse living in my bldg who came here as a temp nurse from Florida, expecting to stay for 3 months, and he's still here 7 years later. He's now studying to get his masters. He's worked for a few different hospitals. Not sure which one he's working at now.

Here's a Craigslist search for jobs with the search word "construction" in just the south bay area:

SF bay area all jobs classifieds "construction" - craigslist

I don't mean to come across as cynical and really do like to offer great advice and help people out on this forum. However, I have to agree with others here in that you can have all that you're looking for...at a price. CA is very expensive. I was born and have lived my entire life in the Bay Area and can't afford to buy a home in any of the areas I'd actually want to live in. It's hard to give advice to people coming from other states about how to find the "ideal location" sometimes. If it was that easy, more CA residents would already be there. On a side note, I am able to rent in a neighborhood I like. I'd never be able to afford the same home in an equivalent neighborhood on my currently salary though.

There are cheap parts of CA but you'll typically have to sacrifice job opportunities as well as overall quality of life. Any place near the beach (meaning within 40-50 miles) will be expensive, even if it's not a good place to live...period.

Where in CA have you been before? I'm looking for something specific here...a reason, connection, purpose for wanting to live in CA. Those things matter. It's hard to get detailed when you don't have direction at all and ask if there are any good hospitals out here. Maybe you have just come here asking questions way too soon? Good luck to ya.

Sorry bu I have to laugh just a bit. Isn't that what almost everyone wants?

Why not do the travel nurse thing for a while to see how you like it?

You want hills by a beach and near a hospital. So that narrows it down to like the coast of California which is hundreds of miles long.

It is time for you and hubby to have a sit down and really think about what you want. The two of you have very different jobs with different opportunities. I'm not trying to be harsh but everyone that posts here moving to California wants what you want. You're going to have to pay for it. Add a couple of kids and you are down to a lower income level right? Nurses can always find a job, Carpenters not so much because a lot of that trade is locked up in California. Sure, top notch Carpenters get work but not overnight and there is a huge difference between those that say they are Carpenters and those than hang tool belts on and say they are.

Time for some real life planning before deciding on moving to California.
