$2k a month to live in NY, SF Miami or SD? I lol'd. You can double that amount if you choose SF or NY and throw in another grand for Miami or SD unless you want to be in the crap parts of town.

NYC is for sure very alive and I think also is San Francisco. I don't really know about the other two. But it depends on your definition of alive as well.

I've never been to Miami, but I would rank the others as follows:

SF
SD

NY

However, with a $2k rent budget I'd probably prefer SD.

The issues with NYC and SF are that your rental budget will put you far away from the happening parts of town, and you will feel 'out of it.' $2k/month will put you much closer to the active parts of San Diego. Unfortunately, the active parts of San Diego are not like New York City.

Narrowing it down to the only two of these cities that I know well, I am torn. I couldn't recommend living in NYC. My experience with the city was a feeling of claustrophobia. However, you would only do it for a year, and having done it, would always have that experience to fall back on, but I just can't recommend it. San Diego - it can really trap you in for the long haul. It's pretty nice.

I've only travelled (never lived) in all 4 areas. Not caring about the financial aspect, I'd personally choose San Diego or San Francisco. Firstly, the weather at each of those places is never brutally hot. It's cool and comfortably warm. Both cities have a lot to do.

Miami has humid weather if I'm not mistaken & I hate that.
NY - Is nice, but I'm the least familiar with this place out of the 4, so I'd like to visit again to see & do more.

Miami & NY, I think are much more party & (night) club areas. But there's still a lot to do in both locations too.
