When I visited Humboldt County (and Del Norte) last month, the fall colors were fabulous. For example, the understory of the Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway was so beautiful and what a great contrast to the evergreens... I think I hit it at the peak in fact. I'm planning to move to the area and took a mental note to make sure I hit that highway, and the parks/trails off it, every fall! I have been in New England and Tennessee/N. Carolina during peak fall foliage but Northern California is just as beautiful... but different too with all the evergreens in the area.

people back east think CA is all about beaches, LA and Palm trees.

I live in CA and not only do we have fall colors, but I get more snow in my area than most of the east coast.

Yes, the Sierras below a certain elevation get fall color and the Shasta area near Redding, too. Many city neighborhoods can have great fall color...notably Willow Glen in San Jose and the suburbs of Los Gatos, Saratoga and Mountain View seemed to have a lot, too. I lived in the San Jose area for quite awhile.

The Hecker Pass Hwy from slightly inland Gilroy to Watsonville near the coast goes over hills that have great fall color and Madonna County Park along that route is beautiful.

CA has "some" fall colors in "some" areas, but it's nothing like the complete explosion of foliage that takes over the entire Northeast.
