Boll weevils could not be reached for comment. Shifting cotton production to California made A LOT of sense.

And how much does shipping bales of alfalfa for livestock cost?

Jan, Feb, Mar are the three wettest months so I wouldn't be worried unless we don't get rain during our rainy period.

It did when you had a surplus of cheap water. It still does for the farmer if water is priced cheaply.

It does NOT make sense from allocating of a scarce resource (water) to low value crops from a societial point of view......or the California and Federal taxpayers that are subsidizing that water.

Sell the water at auction for efficient allocation of resources.

I guess that's why last year's total rainfall was 3.4 inches.

I remember the drought of 76-77. It looked like we were going to have a third dry year but suddenly in March '78 the jet stream dipped south and the "Pineapple Express" kicked in. We had one storm after another (daily) for a solid month until levees were bursting in the Sacramento Valley. They called it the March Miracle. While I'm worried, I try to remember anything can happen.

Interesting that you say that, because I recall a "March Miracle" in about 1991 or so. Apparently, they can happen sporadically. I sure hope we get on this year!

A dry year does not negate those being our wettest months

That happened in 1992 I believe as well. Not to the same degree but it had been dry that winter but then March happened.

Yeah, I remember that late start. My dad passed from cancer on Dec 23rd, 1992 and we had been heading into a third dry year. The very next day the skies opened up and it started raining heavily for the rest of the season (my sister said Dad had a talk with someone in charge about it ).
