Do you think Stand Your Ground would be good for CA ? (Santa Monica: 2014, amusement park)

I read recently about a terrible attack of a young college student by a homeless man .
Totally unprovoked .

I was thinking this would of been a situation that could of been avoided if the guy man was allowed to have a firearm and protect himself as he would be in a state like Florida .

This type of random attack is not a random occurrence but these random violent attacks by the homeless happen pretty often in California .

It’s a shame now this young man will likely have scars for life and most likely psychological damage from such a brutal attack .

I’m not a gun person but I feel it’s wrong that the state doesn’t allow one to defend themselves . Especially since the politicians are the ones that have allowed this homeless situation to get out of hand . It’s like adding insult to injury .

So now you want to bring this same story from the LA homeless thread to the general thread ... and advocate for violence against the homeless in a second forum. Ok. I’m up for it.

The story reads that a lone homeless guy attacked a group of college buddies who were out drinking and carousing until 3 am.

You are claiming the lone homeless guy was unprovoked and simply decided it would be a good idea to assault overwhelming odds.

What are the chances? Lol.

Your topical inference is that shooting the homeless is a good idea. Because they are so dangerous.

While facts are that violence against the homeless by non-homeless are far more frequent ... 1657 violent attacks aganst the homeless, including 423 murders, police-report and media documented here:

Florida had the case of Trayvon Benjamin Martin being shot by George Zimmerman. It's just one case, but I still think the "stand your ground" law just isn't that great. Seems to be a recipe for more violence.

BTW, OP, have you reviewed CA firearms laws, and the restrictions on concealed carry? What would be the point in passing a SYG law, if a lot of people can't get a CCW license? Have you thought your proposal through? If so, please elaborate. Lay it on us.

ITA, it seems to be a very bad law, where people are kIlled for trivial reasons. Not the way I think is the right way.

I always wonder is Stand your ground a defecto makeshift version of the Castle Doctrine for those who are unfortunate to not have a “castle” to live in and defend from attacks. Then homeless can defend their turf in the alley or on the piece of sidewalk, train/bus station, wherever they camp or make home. I could imagine how many homeless on homeless stand your ground case would happen in big cities in California with large amounts of people and how many innocent bystanders would be hurt or killed as well. With Florida’s SYG law I guess that’s why nationwide amusement park chains are ever more cautious about screening guests entering the park, as they have most parks in Florida. Where we definitely don’t want someone who packed heat to “stand their ground” In a theme park I’d In middle of crowded Walt Disney world where there are lots of people walking around, waiting in line, or harnessed in a ride.

I would be curious what this trend was trying to solve. While I do agree that media is bias most of the time I seem to agree with one thing they say that it’s a solution to a nonexistent problem. Apparently the fad legislation all all started with a man in Florida who shot and killed a FEMA volunteer while he was staying in a FEMA camp due to his home being destroyed by Hurricane Ivan’s storm surge. Though I would like to ask what a FEMA disaster relief volunteer be doing that is so threatening that would prompt someone to shoot to defend his life. And interestingly he was acquitted even though stand your ground didn’t even exist back then. It’s not like a person was put in prison for the rest of his life because the court ruled they could have retreated when though they were clearly cornered and almost beaten to death before they “unintentionally” killed an attacker.
And the trend rapidly spread to 28 states within five years. It’s like we are going back to the west in the 21st century. Hard to believe states spend time on a sweeping reform to encourage vigilante justice and often involving racial disparity when we have so many other social issues to deal with.
