Because Mexico doesn't really give a ***** about the environment or the long term consequences associated with it?

Again, there are desal plants underway. One is in construction in Carlsbad, the other is undergoing more feasibility studies in Huntington Beach. We still have to bear in mind that this is not a passive process but one that requires energy to push water through the membranes--energy enough that it doubles the prevailing price for water. In the ideal world we'd use passive solar.

I have wondered if it's possible to create tanks and sink them into the deep ocean, allowing pressure of those depths to force water through the membranes. But we'd still have to devote energy to siphoning it to shore. Any way we look at it there are huge costs that fiscal responsibility requires we regard closely.

Huh? Where did that come from? Are you insinuating that desalinization plants somehow harm the environment?
