I don't know if this is true or not, but I believe I read that the northern part of the state supplies the southern part with water. Hmm. Now, the northern third wants to secede. The rest of the state attacks the northern third as being backwards; however, it appears they control your water needs. Do you see where I'm going with this?

Yes. The new state (if it gets to that) of Jefferson is going to honor whatever legal obligations, contracts, and ownership rights that are in effect or will be adopted to ensure the steady, uninterrupted flow of water. They will not be able to simply 'walk away' and take all the toys with them.

[if it was that easy, Jefferson would have been a state by now]

1) The northern third of California does not 'want to secede' so far as we know - it has never been polled. What you've had is officials in two counties - Modoc and Siskiyou - vote in favor of secession. These two counties have a population total of around 55k. The remaining 10 counties in California that comprise most proposals of the State of Jefferson total over 800k in population. If you really think a majority of that part of the state wants to secede, feel free to demonstrate that this is so.

2) Southern California gets most of its water from local sources, the Colorado River, the Owens River and the San Joaquin River, not the 'northern third' of the state. The Bay Area gets substantial water from that 'northern third', but they get more from the Sierra Nevada south of that 'northern third'.

3) Under water rights laws in the United States, individual states do not have the right to simply deprive downstream states or individuals of the natural flow of water in streams.

4) What are you proposing, that the water-abundant proposed State of Jefferson are such a bunch of petulant children that they would somehow divert water (um... and put it where?) just in order to be... well, petulant children?

5) The odds of the California legislature agreeing to the secession of the northern third of the state, not to mention Congress agreeing to admit that state, is somewhere between zero and nil.

6) Yeah, everyone sees where you're 'going with this'...

Yes, you took a right on to Troll Ave, then drove two blocks and took a hard right on to Uninformed Nonsense Lane. You are there.

There appear to arise quite a few of these No-Fact Cul-de-Sacs here on this endless journey through the village that is C-D.

A good description has been presented:

Pretty much sums it up. Hope they find some contentment in the fantastical Land of Jefferson, even if only within the mind.

Might it be another pained suggestion that "Jefferson" ought to cut off the water supply?
