For anyone looking to move to Redding CA or the north state for that matter I can give first hand experience and knowledge on it! I moved here roughly a year ago and couldn't be happier. If anyone is thinking about making the move to Redding area let me know if you have any questions. This city has everything without the traffic of a big city. I'm an avid outdoors person and Redding is the 2nd sunniest city in the USA so I can go mountain biking, play golf, hike. kayak and enjoy the outdoors year round. Having 2 huge beautiful lakes and all the mountains nearby is priceless! I couldn't be happier with my choice. I have made several easy trips to San Francisco, Reno, Napa Valley, Tahoe and the Coast since moving here and love the central location to everything. Do not hesitate to message me for details about the area or help finding mortgage brokers or real estate agents you can trust.

Cheers,

Ryan

Wow, it sounds amazing. But...how are the summer temperatures? I can't stand consistent temps above the high 70's.
What are the 2 huge lakes?

Shasta, and Trinity, and Shasta is huge. Highs in Redding are in the high 90's dependent on elevation. A nice area year round.

I'm really happy with my move to Redding in Nov. But, the summer temps are supposed to be well over 100 a lot of the time, according to what the locals tell me. I knew that going in, so I'm prepared for it.

Great place to have a dog, too, with off-leash parks. My favorite one so far is the Turtle Bay East Open Area, which also has the Sacramento River Trail there. It's located at the end of Bechelli Lane, just 2.3 miles from downtown (where I live). You can let your dog off leash there - there are signs that say it's a dog exercise area. It's being worked on constantly. But, even now, it's great with trails and access to the Sacramento River.

I love all the cheap shopping options - all my favorite stores - Grocery Outlet, FoodMaxx, Winco, Target, Costco, Wal-Mart, Trader Joes...on and on. It's amazing the shopping options here for this size town lol!

And lots of food banks and amenities for seniors, too.

As someone who actually lived here in Redding since 1972 the highs in Redding during summer are VERY hot, often well above 100, In fact it's not unusual for temps to reach 115 and higher. I remember a couple of years ago we hit 120.

Shasta and Whiskeytown lakes are both man made lakes. Whiskeytown has one beach area Brandy Creek which is known to have health issues for those swimming there.... Whiskeytown Parasites: What to Know Before You Swim | Local News - Home

And right now, due to the massive drought we are experiencing, Shasta Lake is a shadow of it's normal self at only 36% full... California Has Driest Year Ever -- And It May Get Worse

I left Redding two years ago. I’m not missing it. If you’re reading this please do your homework before moving there.

The biggest negatives:

There’s lots of crime, panhandlers and druggies.

The extreme right, anti-business, anti-book smart attitudes are rampant.

I found that having a college degree in Redding gets you shunned.

There are no decent paying careers, and all the sunshine and clean air won’t matter without a good career.

Redding will always be the place where truckers stop to take a dump and fuel up. It’s the armpit of the north.

If you’re looking for something a LOT better try Chico, CA.

Redding, Bakersfield and Fresno are the most polarizing places on this forum! Half the people love those towns, the other half hate them. (Ok, it does seem like most people hate Bakersfield...)

For my part, I have not been to any of those places. But I like skiing, and Mt. Shasta is near Redding...

Ugh! That's even hotter than northern NM, which I'm trying to escape! I'm tired of having to spend summers indoors, with the air conditioning.

Hmm, you'd do well in a coastal town, but unfortunately all the decent ones I can think of are expensive to live in (except mine)! Or do you prefer mountains?
