My father living in Texas is gifting me his 1980 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham. It's in mint shap and he bought it when I was three years old in 1981. It's like a younger brother of mine. Any he treated it like his baby. I plan I keeping the registration under his name and having the car physically in CA for as long as possible. Since he is still legally a resident of TX, do we need to change plates or can we just keep renewing online and keeping the car in CA? If I get pulled over, can I just say he travels back and forth and leaves his car here? We have the same first and last names too.

Will Texas need to perform a safety inspection or can I get the registration online without having to physically take the car there?

Thanks!

If you're driving it on the public roads, you aren't storing it.

If the car is titled to your father and he's still in Texas, then, no, you don't need to re-title in California. It's up to Texas DMV about how you keep renewing, though.

Yes, it is still registered to him, he has his DL and valid insurance. I will be keeping the car for him here though. Another problem with registering it in CA, is I dont even know if it will pass the smog check...

I also dont plan on driving it that much at all. My other car is a 2011 Nissan Leaf.. I've put over 50,000 miles on it and I havent visited a gas station in years and dont plan on doing that too often in the future.

You actually can't register a car belonging to another person. He'd have to sell it to you, or he'd have to title it himself in California.

Don't worry about it. This type of thing happens all the time--example--you send your child and older car off to college in another state. You maintain title, registration and insurance in your own state while child and car are gone for four years. No problem.
