If you want to know more about gangs in CA, head to some of these areas and study the graffiti on the wall:

1/ West Oakland ("the flats")
2/ East LA
3/ South Central LA
4/ Compton
5/ East San Jose
6/ Bayview-Hunter's Point (San Francisco)

Be careful though, it's gang turf.

My favorite gang film is "Colors" with Sean Penn.

Uh, I'd be careful about traveling to Oakland gang territory. The gangs there seem extremely violent compared to the other places on the list, even engaging in open daylight shootouts in public streets.

East LA, South LA, and Compton are actually very tame now days compared to how they were 20 years ago. You will probably be okay visiting and researching there. I don't know much about East San Jose.
