A rough, oversimplified outline of California political history:

Red state: 1860-1960
Reddish purple state: 1960-90.
Blue state: 1990-Present.

Democrats cheating the got might have a great deal to do with it.
Mine as well as many other republicans were isolated during the vote , by not being on the roster as every democrat was in our designated voting pole.
I know this having comparing notes with other republican voters.

Land-use patterns.

Dense city or relatively dense suburban living means you see and interact with people who are different from you on a much more frequent basis than someone who lives in a rural or sprawling suburban area. Interacting with people who are different from you on a frequent basis makes you much more likely to have the ability to empathize with and understand these different types of people. The city dweller therefore develops a more "egalitarian village" idea of what our society should be like, because they recognize that "we're all in this together." The rural farmer or large-lot suburban homeowner develops a more "hardy homesteader" idea of what our society should be like, because they feel that they're "on their own out here."
