Sacramentans are Hella way cool, and very friendly.

Just tonight, went to see a band in Midtown Sacramento and threw back some whisky shots with two 33 year gay dudes who recently moved here from Austin, Texas. They said they were so over Austin, and absolutely love everything about Sacramento. yeah, really. I was kinda shocked too.
You're welcome to your opinion--Freedom of Speech!

However, by "negative vibe," I mean just plain unfriendly, unwelcoming people. That's what I've met in and from Sacramento. It reminds me quite a bit of Louisville, KY, where I lived in 2004-05 and came away with a terrible taste of, despite locals parading about how friendly of a city they have.

In no way am I a "coastal snob." One of the towns I grew up in was a tiny farm town of 250 residents in the po-dunk South.

Lastly, at my college down here in OC, many of the people I meet or encounter from Sacramento doesn't exactly smile. In fact, one of my classmates is from Placerville and just simply a b*#(*. Even the OC'ers, for all the snobs, are a more smiley bunch in comparison.

beachdeni - Have traveled extensively all over California as a longtime motorcyclist. I know HMB very well. Used to live in Carmel and Santa Cruz. Been to most of the coastal towns btw Newport Beach and Brookings. My daughter is enrolled at WWU in Bellingham.

If I was to relocate to Humboldt County, it'd most likely be to Fortuna as there's something about it that feels right. It's not what I'd call a coastal town although it is by the Eel River. The climate there is ideal. Just up the road is College of the Redwoods and Humboldt State.

Incidently, I stayed with friends in Diamond Springs near Placerville for a couple of days, and it was more like a suburb of the Sacramento Valley than a mountain town. Wasn't expecting that much congestion on the roads nor so many condo complexs. And, yes, it gets hot up there. Not my kind of town.

Hope it all works out for you guys.

You and your daughter might be able to get a rental for a decent price (2 bedroom) in Shell Beach.
Theres lots of fog but lots of gorgeous days too. 10 mins south of San Luis Obispo.

If you want somewhat affordable on the coast Salinas might fit the bill. I lived there seven years (1997 to 2004). Its about 11 miles from Monterey Bay, but has an almost perfect climate and clean air for a larger town. San Jose is less than an hour north if you need a big city and Monterey is less than 30 minutes.
