So here I was last night visiting up in Fullerton, CA. Just after 9pm I be walking in a neighborhood when all of a sudden the ground begins shaking hard. One house is rattling...looks like its going to shaken off its foundation. I see power flashes going off lighting up the sky. The shaking lasts for a bit. People are screaming. I glad the earthquake wasn't "The Big One", when I was walking I was right under these power lines. Just think if one of those power lines would've snapped. Then 30 minutes later another earthquake happened. It turns out I was only like 3 miles from the epicenter.

I was living in Southern California when the 1987 and 1994 earthquakes hit, both were a shock. The 1987 one was very violent, from what I recall and the 1994 one shook me out of my bed (at around 4:30 AM, if I recall).

The worst earthquake in California history, in terms of damage and deaths was the 1906 7.7 San Francisco quake. (It was found to be not quite as strong as the traditional "8.2 magnitude" rating.

The worst quake for me was the 1994 6.7 Northridge (actually Reseda) quake.

Given the time period, lack of earthquake-resistant technology, and little knowledge about earthquakes, i would say the San Francisco quake of 1906 is the worst, and by far. That quake virtually wiped out the entire city, killed thousands of people, and leveled huge swaths of the city. A quake of that size would probably not be nearly as damaging today due to advances in research, knowledge, and building technology. However, a large quake will certainly cause death and major damage in susceptible areas, and we can only hope and pray that the Big One is not as big as we expect it to be.

In terms of damages and death, the 1906 is without peer.

the worst ones that I have felt in recent memory, all were at times when I was in San Diego. the 1992 Big Bear and Landers qukes were crazy! One woke me up and the other happened when I was sitting on a bus 3 hours later. I remember calling it "earthquake Sunday" as it was a sunday. The Northridge quake woke me up and shook for a long time. I was wondering when it was going to stop. the earthquake that really got my attention was the 2010 Easter Sunday quake which was somewhere in northern baja south of El Centro. That one hit like a hammer unlike most quakes in SD and shook hard.

1906 for sure. It wasn't just the quake itself, the subsequent fires were extremely destructive. My grandpa was 6 in 1906 and living in Yolo County. He remembered the entire westward sky being red for days from the fires.

I survived the Loma Prieta and Northridge quakes. 5.1 isn't anything to worry about.
