Sandy, thank you for the beautiful photos! Looks like a great place to beachcomb and listen to the water percolate through those rocks.

Does anyone know about the geology of the area? Why does this beach have black rocks instead of typical California beach sand?

I appreciate this so much more after being in Washington state for a while and see how limited beach access is since private property owners can own the beach in Washington state.

We enjoyed Clam Beach recently, only did a quick check out of it though.

I am not sure about any other Humboldt County beaches, but the testing there showed unsafe high bacteria levels and suggested not going in the water at the time. This was last week. It explained why we did not see any surfers because the waves were nice. We did see some families with small children running around though, hope they all washed up well soon after leaving.

The signs only showed the coast warning for the beaches north of Clam Beach, I hope it balances out soon for all as I think it is probably true for the ones south as well.

Do you remember which beaches had high bacteria levels? I did read about a creek in Humboldt that tested above the safe limits for bacteria... could very well empty out onto a beach... right now, I'm drawing a blank on which creek... anyone remember?

Clam Beach and all north of it, it also did show south down to Mad River on the map. Sorry, that was the only one we went to in the time we had between real estate meetings and such. All the coast on that map was marked as unsafe for now, this was on Friday.

It also had a warning about not catching or eating clams, oysters, or mussels because of it. It did not say when they would test again, only that they test periodically.

There was a flyer that caught my eye about baby seal pups, how they are not lost and do not try to rescue them. I got excited thinking we may see one but only seagulls, dead shellfish and crab pieces, and big kelp balls.

I am thinking all the beaches that are part of a park would have a similar bulletin board, or a website somewhere about it? I would look it up but too tired tonight, the time zone and temp switches are taking a toll from traveling. I'll check tomorrow if nobody else finds the info first.
