I'll be in Pismo Beach during Memorial Day weekend and would like to do some wine tasting. In general, I prefer more laid back, casual wineries (like ones you'd find in Sonoma or near the Russian River) than the Napa, private limos, $20-a-tasting type of experience. Anyone have any solid recommendations that are fun with great wine? There will be four of us, so we don't mind driving up to an hour or so. Thanks in advance!

We live out in the hills on the San Miguel/Paso Robles border where the vineyards are interspersed with horse and cattle ranches and olive groves... the link below covers 20 wineries with accompanying descriptions which are more less hyperbolic and more accurate than the standard Paso/Templeton/San Miguel COC blurbs... 12 or so of the wineries on this list we *know* are laid-back, great quality experiences with nice wines because our neighbors love 'em... while these vineyards serve the expected 'blends', most of these also part with 'reserve' vintages at tastings which many other wineries/vineyards do not... the same 'bottles that leave here by private jet on the way back to L.A.', as they say around here.

and our personal pick for taking friends visiting from up north is Graveyard Vineyards:

Happy hunting!

You can't go wrong with most any of the wineries on the list posted above, but here are a few of our favorites from the area:

Adelaide
Castoro
Peachy Canyon
Tobin James

Have fun!

Dave

I'll second Tobin James. Great wines and free tastings! Very fun atmosphere and definitely laid back. Just need to watch how much you taste since you can easily get hammered there on your first visit without buying anything! I would also recommend Eberle, just down the road from Tobin James (excellent wine and caves, too). And if you like Zinfandel, you must definitely visit Turley in Paso/Templeton. Not a huge selection of wines but those they have are sooooo good!! When you get hungry, be sure to check out Pier 46 in Templeton (next to Trader Joe's) for THE best seafood (fresh and casual atmosphere). More often than not, we end up buying food and sitting in our rental car to eat since there's limited seating inside/outside but it's well worth it!! Cheers!!
