I was mainly looking at either IE or OC or SDC as OC is already permitting CCW for just self defense, SD supposedly said they would, and I heard SBC was easy to get them also.

CCW is headed for a higher court, with an unknown outcome. Wouldn't make any residential or job commitments based on what may be a temporary situation. Could be a very expensive mistake.

I'm a SoCal native and there are so many opportunies for offroading: Anza-Borrego, Death Valley, Big Bear, Mojave Desert, Eastern Sierras. There is a lot of BLM land in SoCal. There are many old mining roads and forest service roads. Buy a DeLorme for reference. Regarding one of your other issues, California will never, ever be a gun-friendly state. Ever. Also, please don't say Cali. Ever.

In all seriousness. Butchey, you are never going to be happy with California. Your concerns and foci put you anyplace but CA.

I'll echo that. The places that would meet your criteria in "Cali", as you called it, would not be great places to live. You could probably go into Arizona or Nevada and find places more suitable that are nicer AND less expensive.

Maybe because many of those folks who demand a stockpile of guns aren't very friendly!

But progress is being made:

The rate of gun violence in California has also fallen notably compared to rest of the country. Today, California has the ninth lowest gun death rate of any state nationwide when twenty years ago, it had the thirty-fifth lowest rate

I'm going to echo that (born in San Diego, raised in Orange County) but as for the gun/CCW issue, ABC - Anywhere But California, just like we retired. There will always be anti-gun pressure in the state and draconian restrictions on what you can purchase, how you must keep it and what you can do with it. Since that's such a big issue for you I strongly suggest you look elsewhere to settle. SE Texas comes immediately to mind if you can handle the humidity.
