Hi All,

I got a Driving License from Michigan state in year 2010..and its getting expired in another 2 weeks from now..I have moved to California , Mountain View now..

I wanted to know the procedures of renewing it so I can use it in CA..

Do I still need to pass written test and drive test to get my DL renewed in CA..? (as I have already proven my driving in Michigan)..

please help here as I tried to contact DMV office here and they are all time busy..

thanks
Shankar

You will need to pass the written test. You don't usually have to take a driving test if your out of state license is still valid, but that will be determined at the time.

Go to the DMV website and make your appointment.

See if the answer is on the DMV website, and if not keep calling. I doubt you will find DMV experts here.

The short answer is you don't get it "renewed" in California -- you apply for a new California license (in fact, if you changed residence, not just visiting, you were supposed to do that within 10 days).

However, having a valid license in another state does make the process a bit simpler; at least when I did it you still had to take the written test (and note that some laws may be different in CA, so worth studying the guide online at the DMV first), but didn't have to take a road driving test.

Do check the DMV website, as they have plenty of information, and you can even make an appointment there. Excerpts from Driver License and Identification Card Information

"If you become a California resident, you must get a California driver license within 10 days."
"If you have a license from another state, the driving test can be waived"

You might have to pass written test and road test as it varies depending where your former license was issued. (I did have to take to take both a written & road test when I moved to California years ago.) But I don't know whether one does for a Michigan state license (as I didn't come from Michigan!).

You will most likely have to take the written test. I moved from Nevada to California recently and had to do that. I suggest studying the handbook online because I had certainly forgotten a lot of the rules between the time I got my learner's permit and the time I took the rest again.

If your car is registered in Michigan then they will want you to change that as well.

You should be able to make an appointment at the DMV, though you'll probably still have to wait a while. Just not as long as you will without an appointment.
