Haven't you been there yet?
I suppose "girlfriend" means something different in my world.

There are two aspects to Stockton (in my experience):
One is the role of farthest practical distance to have a bedroom community for people who work in Sac (about 48mi).
The other is for people who will never get out of the valley. Those two lines will get crossed.

Plenty of comments and info on the Sacramento boards about Stockton. Suggest you search it.

I can see how you might think that but according to the latest available census figures, 36,000 people from San Joaquin County work in the Bay Area, whereas 7,000 work in Metro Sacramento.

This^^^^^^

Stockton is more a commuterburb for the Bay and East Bay.

Dont You trust your girl to give you info about the place she lives? Honestly don't come here without a job. 19% official unemployment figures for San Joaquin County. Unoffical numbers are probably closer to 30%.

Lots of low cost housing to buy, but rent prices are starting to increase.

Hopefully she has a good job already or the two of you are in for some HARD times.

All depends on where you're moving FROM. If you're moving from Detroit, then no, Stockton isn't that depressing. At least you wouldn't have snow storms 4 months out of the year. Most of the rest...well you'd still have Detroit but with sunny sunny sunshine!

However, if you're moving from the Hamptons in New York, then I'd stay in the Hamptons and tell the gf to move.

I looked out there about 5 years ago before the foreclosures really hit hard. "Depressing" doesn't begin to describe it. It was the most lifeless place I'd ever seen, and that was before things went south.
