I grew up on the beach in So Cal and have lived all over the country. I've been, by default, living in San Diego County again, for a while, to help my parents, who were ill. I injured myself severely catching my father falling; and am now living on the lowest budget imaginable. I'm hoping to get enough from the house sale to purchase something, somewhere, for maybe 30k...which leaves me with mobile homes, Detroit, or a shack in the South. Before giving up and heading to Dixie Land, I'm grasping at straws.

Anyone have any ideas? I'm not yet 50, so I'd have to finagle to get into an age restricted park. Plus, I have three (tiny) dogs, which some places will allow, but not many.

Even if you were to find a mobile home for 30k, which seems unlikely, you'd have to pay space rent. Itd be at least 375.

Most mobile home parks in California are no longer age restricted.

Maybe Siskyou County? Somewhere up that way? For instance I found this town with a couple of properties you could pay cash for, a couple that you would only have to finance a little:

Why buy? If real estate prices hold steady you won't be benefiting financially from ownership. It will be cheaper off renting(without dogs).

You know, I was thinking, what about buying a motor home? You could then either buy a lot somewhere in the boonies where nobody would care if you had your motor home there - or you could just keep moving it around - or pay space rent in an RV park. Just a thought. Then you could have all your dogs, and it might be kind of fun to just move around. I've actually thought of doing this myself.

I really doubt that it's realistic to find something in a nice safe area in California, especially on the coast. I lived in California for most of my life, but given the COL there, we decided to move to Florida in retirement. I'm finding that it's really nice here and much more affordable.

There are lots of mobile home communities where you could buy a home with low monthly dues. But, be sure to buy in a resident owned community. There are many nice ones to choose from on both the east and west coasts of Florida if you would like to be by the ocean. We don't prefer southern Florida, but like the central coasts on up to northern Florida. There are so many nice communities to choose from in your price range
.

For the Central Coast I agree with nightlysparrow, Orcutt is probably your best bet for bargain prices. My father-in-law and his wife just retired in Santa Maria right next door to Orcutt and they are very happy there, especially after leaving a much colder Colorado. They are close to Pismo and some other nice beaches in the area.

Since you left out so many other factors its hard to tell which would be a better fit: Dixie vs. Central California. For example do you like California and would you stay here if you could? Have you visited the South much? Where are your ties such as family or friends? Would it be weird moving somewhere far from your original home? Would anyone go with you?

Derek
