I also think it would be great to be able to live without a car.

Be assured that all your dreams will come true in Sacto. No crime, lots of jobs, total acceptance, very friendly, extremely affordable...

It sounds like Oz without the wizard. Where's Toto? lol

Honestly, I think folks sometimes expect a little too much from any city which in reality will always have some kind of underbelly including it's own set of flaws. That's why it's nice to have a car (or bus pass) to escape every now and again.

LOL! No, I'm tired of posters who ask us what the best place is for them to move to, then they shoot down every option given to them, when we tell them it's not possible, but here's the next best thing...

Therefore, I think I'll just pick a CA city of the week that will be the perfect place for people to move to, where all their dreams will come true. Why not? They probably won't ever leave their little hidey holes anyway. Who am I to spoil their dreams?

I'm thinking next week it will be......Susanville.

Actually, Barstow is a great little town. After all these suggestions, I want to add that.

For NorCal, Sacramento might be a good fit, as long as the OP doesn't mind absolute flatness and some communities with their share of trashy people. Oakland might be a good fit, as long as the OP says out of Mayor Quan's infamously labeled "100 blocks." Santa Cruz might be a good fit, as long as the OP doesn't mind occasional coastal fog and a smaller city. San Franciso might be a good fit, as long as the OP lives in only Potrero Hill or Bernal Heights because of their greater exposure to sunshine, and doesn't mind putting up with some seriously snobby people.

Barstow actually wasn't as bad as I expected. Not my first choice of places, but I've seen worse in Appalachia. At least you're reasonably accessible to the I.E., L.A. and the coast, Bakersfield, and Las Vegas when you get cabin fever .

It's still far more livable than certain areas of urban swaths such as south L.A., most of Compton, north Long Beach, west and east Oakland, most of Stockton, central San Bernardino, etc.

Now El Centro and Calexico, those places have some serious issues on their hands. You're close enough to San Diego, sure...and what else, Mexicali and Yuma?!

Anyway, back to the topic of the thread...

Our little secret, we love the flat terrain, Great for riding bikes and walking through Big Shady Tree-Lined neighborhoods.

I'd rather have lots of big shady trees than a few hills.

Hills with views can be had under 20 miles in the eastern towns and suburbs of Sacramento. From there it's straight up hill to Mountains with actual real forests, and a ton of snow in the winter.

Yeah, plus you could make the same argument about any hot western city, like Vegas -- sure, the actual temperature is 106, but it only feels like 96... It's hard to quantify those "real feel" temps accurately. I find Sac pretty hot in the summer, but the tradeoff is that it's then warm in spring and summer during the shoulder seasons. So you're getting 9 to 10 months of AWESOME weather. No place in the world is sunnier than Sacramento in July, Aug, and September, too. Unique fact.
