Obviously not as good as SF as a whole but not that terrible either.

SF State is in a very cold, foggy, and boring part of SF imo.
That's all true about San Diego, but as soon as you want to go out of the core you're looking at scant public transportation.

Better than speculation, here are the public transit sites for comparison by the OP:

San Diego: Transit.511sd.com

LA/Long Beach: Metro Trip Planner

San Francisco: 511.org

Cal Poly Pomona is on the eastern edge of LA county. Public transportation out there is not wonderful. SLO would be better in that respect.

Long Beach State actually is great for those using public transportation. I actually used to take the bus there during my freshman year from Buena Park, using OCTA. There are three services that stop at LBSU: OCTA, Long Beach Transit and METRO. From Long Beach, you can take the blue line to L.A. for an easy day trip. The Passport gives free rides and connects Belmont Shore (which is near LBSU) to downtown Long Beach.

When I was there, CSULB students could ride the bus for free, I'm not sure if this is still true.

SFSU is super easy to get to via public transit. There's a Muni stop right in front of campus and there's also a BART shuttle that runs every 15-20 mins.
