Hi:
I am looking to move up to Humboldt county, particularly Arcata. But someone mentioned Trinidad as an alternative for various reasons.

I would love to hear from the locals who live there about the town. I am looking to rent a room, too.

Thanks,
Stephanie

the only reason we stopped in trinidad was to eat breakfast at a place on the dock - it was freaking amazing!! while eating at the seascape restaurant, you can watch the boats come & go, the local wildlife, etc

be prepared for a wait - this place is POPULAR!!

Trinidad is a tiny city (and yes it IS an incorporated city with their own PD and everything) north of McKinleyville. Unless you're quite wealthy you won't get a nice house overlooking the ocean, and the inland area is kind of crappy to be honest. I love visiting Trinidad but I doubt I'd want to live there even if I was wealthy. Stick to McKinleyville or Arcata.

Not really all that much in Trinidad. It is predominately a tourist area. There is a grocery store and a gas station, but that is about it for services.
Most of Trinidad is under the trees so it is always dark, and being coastal, moist. Mold can be an issue, so if you are sensitive to mold, I would not suggest Trinidad.
More sun, go inland, perhaps Blue Lake.

According to Wikipedia, the population of Trinidad is only 364. You might have to wait for someone to die before you can move there.

Also, there was another thread not long ago which mentioned that Trinidad no longer has its own police department and is now contracting with the Humboldt County Sheriff:

Police Department

I think the thread mentioned that there has been an upswing in crime as a result, but my Google searches are mostly turning up other Trinidads so I can't say for sure.

It's a nice place to visit as long as you watch where you park. The crime is very apparent. When I visited and parked in a lot right above the beach there was a big sign stating that "Many cars have been broken into, so park here at your own risk." Heeding their warning I decided to drive quite a ways away and parked in a residential area, then walked down from there.

Here is the article on rising crime rates and the loss of their local PD: Trinidad Seeks to Battle Crime Wave | McKinleyville Press

It's pretty much a one horse town. According to one Eureka local: "Trinidad is a great place to visit but not to live. The denizens are either in a trailer park or very expensive housing. Total pop. 700. And it's a half hour drive to anything except their two restaurants and one market." --//www.city-data.com/forum/35521237-post22.html

Last fall, I scoped out Trinidad for possible living. I would agree with everything said here... great for visiting, probably not as practical for living. Some of the (expensive) houses do have killer views but there are few amenities in the town and nothing really nearby to speak of. That said, the pocket beach there is BEAUTIFUL!!! and the view above equally stunning. I liked walking out on the long dock near the restaurant. Good place to observe the rock dwelling sea life up close and personal without getting your feet wet.
